Cursed Pirate Girl. (Part 1)

I’ve just finished reading Cursed Pirate Girl and I found it really delightful. Oft it is compared to Alice in Wonderland but reading it put me more in mind of the various Baron Munchhausen adventures. The inexplicable and absurd going by without comment, the dry wit and love of adventure that the titular Cursed Pirate Girl has, and the art style itself all reminded me of Munchhausen’s adventures. The connection I see with the art style is of course through Gustave Dore’s illustrations. If it is not an intentional pastiche of Dore’s art, it is a remarkable coincidence.
I loved the continuous transformations of characters into different forms, oftentimes coupled with their eating or being eaten by something. It was a delightful motif, if only because the transformations were coupled with the story being told reaching a new height of absurdity. The parrot Pepper Dice being eaten by a fish and then becoming the fish, The Governor eating Cursed Pirate Girl’s eye and transforming into some unseen monstrosity, it emphasized the visual value of the medium.
Of course, it would have fallen apart if the protagonist herself wasn’t a resourceful, funny and interesting character. She’s one of my favorite protagonists in children’s fiction thus far. A highlight of the comic: CPG is forced to work in the galley of a pirate ship, and she begins expounding with mock resignation how she will never eat good food again and indeed loves slop covered in mold. It wasn’t laugh out loud funny but it kept a smile on my face as I read. There was a wonderful touch with the layouts, minor characters would often have reaction shots that made some grotesqueries on display hilarious.
The art itself is obviously gorgeous. Some people on the internet have complained that it is too dense and too packed with detail but neither of these things were negatives to me.
Read this comic!

Honestly can’t wait for the 50 shades movie to normalize the manipulation of lower-level female employees. Can’t wait for the new wave of “consent is sexy” banners on the cover of cosmo. Can’t wait for teen girls to think that a controlling relationship is romantic. Can’t wait for sexualized violence to become increasingly mainstream. And most of all, I can’t wait for BDSM to be labeled a feminist revolution.
